December 27, 1936, the South American football Championship begins.
In the estadio Gasometro in Buenos Aires, 20,000 spectators are present to attend the first game of the competition, the Brazil against the Peru. After having been absent during the previous four editions, the Brazilian selection of coach Adhemar Pimenta wants to remember the good memories of the other pretenders to the title, and intends to win the third South American Championship in its history. For his fourth participation, the Peru of the coach Alberto Denegri wants to create surprise and finally to pass a level in this competition. The Chilean referee, Mr. Alfredo Vargas, gives the kick-off, and the forward of the São Cristóvão Roberto finds the path of the net at the 7th minute. The tournament is well launched, the Seleção is not there to make up the numbers, and Afonsinho scores the second goal of the match for the Brazilians at the 30th minute. 2-0 for Brazil at half-time, then the Peruvians back on the green rectangle determined, and the emblematic striker of the Universitario Teodoro Fernández Meyzan gives hope to its teammates at the 55th, hope showered two minutes later when Niginho arises and wrong a third time the Peruvian goalkeeper Valdivieso. Teams went blow for blow, and Alejandro Villanueva, scorer of the Alianza Lima, reduced the score one minute later. 3-2 for the Brazil, it remains thirty minutes to play, but the score evolves more, and Seleção by a victory sign his return to South American Championship.
Three days later, el Gasometro filled with 35,000 spectators, all came for the introduction of Argentina, facing the Chile. Still commanded by the former striker of the Albiceleste Manuel Seoane, the Argentines want to reclaim their title after losing it during the last edition against the Uruguayan rival. Meanwhile, the Chile's Uruguayan coach Pedro Mazullo enters the tournament without a real lens, only want to win the most possible match. The referee whistles the kickoff, and the minutes pass when the forward of Boca Juniors Francisco Varallo scores against the Chilean goalkeeper Cabrera on the half-hour. Thirteen minutes later, the same Varallo signed the first double of the tournament and give a decisive advantage to the Argentina. Fans Exult and encourage their players to continue to the second period. But debates are in balance, and the forward of the Santiago Wanderers Raúl Toro reduced the score for la Roja (73rd), and stage remains suspended from this minimal advantage to score for the Argentines. Final whistle blow, relief in the stands, the Argentina wins 2-1 and takes the two points of victory.
On 2 January the new year 1937 sees the defending Uruguayan champion trampling the lawn of the Gasometro, confronted to the Paraguay. Nine minutes of play, Amadeo Ortega opens the score for the Paraguayan selection. The Uruguay is picked to cold, but the forward of Penarol Severino Varela shows the character and sign a double for la Celeste (16th and 28th). The 35,000 spectators themselves that the Uruguayan machine will crush everything in its path, but Aurelio González equalizes at the 35th minute. Three minutes later, the Brazilian referee refers to the penalty spot, penalty that transforms Adolfo Erico. Half time is piped on the score of 3-2 for the Paraguay. Huge sensation! The men of the Uruguayan coach Alberto Supicci return locker rooms as of the dead of starvation, but the minutes pass and finally Amadeo Ortega sealed the score of the game with a double at the 79th minute. Final score 4-2 to the Paraguay, champion title and septuple winner of the Uruguayan fall from his first match, this is the first clap of thunder of the tournament!
The next day, the estadio Ministro Brin y Senguel hosts the second match of the Brazil facing the Chile. And things are not, the striker of Botafogo Patesko opens the score two minutes after the kickoff. La Roja is not yet tucked into his game, and Carvalho Leite take opportunity to doubled the advantage four minutes later. Catastrophic start of match for the men to Pedro Mazullo, but finally the Chilean selection resumed and José Avendaño (19th) and then Raúl Toro (25th) allow la Roja to return to the score. Then the Brazil gets excited again, Patesko sign a double one minute later, before that Luizinho does speak the powder twice in five minutes (30th and 35th). 5-2 for the Seleção, everything is to redo for Chile, which incorporates hope five minutes from half-time through the goal by Guillermo Riveros. The first period ended with already eight goals scored, spectators have for their money! 68th minute, Roberto arises and scores again, and despite a new goal by Raúl Toro (73rd), the Brazil won its second match of the competition with a score of 6-4 and becomes a fearsome to face team.
Three days later, the Uruguayan bruised beast confronts the Peru with one goal victory. The message is well received by the striker of Peñarol Adelaido Camaiti, who opened the score at the 16th minute. 1-0 for la Celeste, but Teodoro Fernández scored his second goal in the competition and gives trouble to head to the Uruguayan selection (29th). Fortunately for the men of Alberto Supicci, Severino Varela no doubt and gives again the advantage to Uruguay two minutes later. Half-time approach, and Adolfo Magallanes equalizes at the 40th minute. 2-2, end of the first period, the Uruguay is decidedly not in his plate. But it included in its ranks a striker on fire in the person of Severino Varela, which mark his fourth goal of the tournament at the 56th minute and shows the way to all its teammates. Juan Emilio Píriz, entered at halftime instead of Braulio Castro, finishes the work eleven minutes from the end of the match, and finally the Uruguay wins on that score of 4-2 his first victory in this South American football Championship.
January 9, this is the Argentina against the Paraguay. Both teams have won their first match, but the Gasometro 42,000 fans make noise to encourage the Albiceleste. 5th minute, the forward of the Racing Club de France Alejandro Scopelli opens the score, followed by Enrique García three minutes later. The stadium spans into joy, and even more so when the striker of the Estudiantes de La Plata Alberto Zozaya wrong again the goalkeeper Manuel González on the half-hour. Both teams returned to the locker room with the score of 3-0 for the Argentina, and decidedly Paraguayan defence taking water from all sides, Scopelli signing a double (54th), imitated twenty minutes later by his partner Zozaya (75th). The score is heavy, but Zozaya is insatiable, and marks the first triple of the tournament at the 82nd. 6-0 for the Argentina, the stands are soaring, and is not the reduction of the score by Aurelio González at the 86th minute that changes anything, the Argentines won a clean, flawless victory and send a serious message to the other selections.
The next day, Chile, after two consecutive defeats, is expected to have a dirty time facing the Uruguayan title. Then the men of coach Pedro Mazullo are motivated on the lawn of the Gasometro, and Raúl Toro signed his fourth goal of the tournament at the 17th minute. 1-0 to Chile, ideal start. Half time is piped on this score, and when the striker of Colo Colo Manuel Arancibia scores a second time (59th) and Raúl Toro sign a double seven minutes from the end of the match, final whistle sounds in the stadium and leaves on the scoreboard 3-0 for the Chile. More than a victory, it may be the beginning of a new adventure for la Roja. As for Uruguay, this competition is definitely complicated, and hope his title becomes more illusory.
Three days later, the Brazil does not have the same problems as la Celeste, and after two wins in two games, the Seleção wants to continue his career perfect face the Paraguay. And the strong men of the last match are still to go, Patesko opened the score at the 31st minute, followed 11 minutes later by his teammate Luizinho. Upon the return of the locker room, Luizinho scored his fourth goal of the tournament (51st), then Carvalho Leite add one more eight minutes later, before that Patesko completes the task at the 67th minute. Score final 5-0 for the Brazil, and if the Argentina on his land wants to retrieve the title lost in the last edition, it will have to rely on Patesko’s teammates, impressive since the start of the competition with three wins in three games, 14 goals for six conceded.
And on 16 January, the Argentina began its third match of the tournament against the Peru with must win to stay in the wheel of the Brazilian compressor roll. The Uruguayan referee gives the kickoff, and 40,000 spectators from the Gasometro see through the first half without incurring any team the advantage to the table display. Time scrolls when Alberto Zozaya issues his own and all the galleries at the 55th minute. 1-0 for Argentina, the match is stretched out, and six minutes from the end of regulation time, the referee expels player of Independiente Antonio Sastre. Then something strange happens when Sastre left the lawn, Héctor Blotto digitally replaces it on the ground without the permission of the referee. The match ends on this victory Argentina 1-0, but the Peru claim for the replacement unauthorized side Argentine, claim that will be rejected by instances of CONMEBOL.
The next day, Paraguayans and Chileans will compete for the places of honor in the competition. And definitely a man wants to mark the tournament's footprint, he wears the jersey of la Roja, it is called Raúl Toro, and sign a new double in this competition (8th and 32nd). But despite its fifth and sixth goal in the competition, Raúl Toro can do nothing against the ardour of the Paraguay, and it is finally the men's coach and former player of Albirroja Manuel Fleitas Solich taking the two points of victory, after the goals of Juan Simón Amarilla (15th), Martín Flor (22nd), and Raúl Núñez Velloso (54th).

Revenge of the last edition, the Argentines seem better than Uruguay. The Chilean Referee Mr. Alfredo Vargas gives the kickoff, and five minutes are enough for the forward of Nacional Eduardo Ithurbide to open the score. Stupor in the aisles, 1-0 for the Uruguay. End of the first period on this score, Juan Píriz arises at the 51st minute and wrong once again the last Argentine rampart. 2-0 for la Celeste, and the cup is full seven minutes later when Severino Varela scores his fifth goal in the competition. 3-0 for the Uruguay, the stadium is silent, and everyone sees the trophy already take the path of the Brazil. 63rd minute, Francisco Varallo reduced the score to the Albiceleste, and Alberto Zozaya scored a second goal five minutes after. 3-2 for the Uruguay, there twenty minutes of play to the Argentines to create the exploit, forums encourage them to break the voice, but the Uruguay holds the shock and sign a full of symbols victory against its eternal rival Argentina. The Albiceleste, the blow is tough, but nothing is finished yet in this tournament, it will be important to win the last match against the Brazilians.
But before this last match of the tournament, Peruvians and Paraguayans also end their competitions during a final confrontation. Not having nothing to play except for a place of honor, it was Peru, thanks to a goal by José María Lavalle, ending this South American Championship with a victory.
On 30 January, record attendance in the Gasometro with 65,000 spectators for the shock of the tournament, the Brazil against the Argentina. For the Brazilians, a simple match draw is enough to their happiness. For Argentines, the victory is imperative. The Uruguayan referee, Mr. Aníbal Tejada, whistle the kickoff, and the tension is unwavering in the aisles to the stage when the two teams return to the changing rooms with a score of 0-0. The Argentine hope is always required, and when the forward of Racing Club de Avellaneda Enrique García opens the score, the crowd roared in concert and encouragement were repeaters for this result.
