For the sixth edition of the South American football Championship (known as Copa América since 1975), Chile is initially designated as hosts of the competition. But ultimately, Brazil ask to receive the tournament on his land to commemorate the centenary of its independence (September 7, 1822) and gets the organization of the South American football Championship 1922. All other selections affiliated with the CONMEBOL, the Argentina (defending champion), the Uruguay , the Chile, and Paraguay are participating in the competition. All games of the tournament held in Rio de Janeiro, in estadio das Laranjeiras, as when the South American Championship 1919.

In the rules of football in 1922, no replacement players is expected during a match, and the referee does not yet of yellow and red cards.

On September 17, 1922, the South American football Championship begins.

On 22 October, 20,000 spectators watching 22 players enter the pitch at estadio das Laranjeiras. The match referee is Argentinean, M. Servando Pérez.
